Create a Timeline (Gantt Chart) for your project

Learn how to build your project plan step by step and visualize it in the Timeline (Gantt Chart).

The Timeline (Gantt Chart) gives you a clear, visual overview of your project schedule. By creating tasks, grouping them into task lists, and adding start and due dates, you can quickly turn your plan into a Timeline that helps you track work and milestones at a glance.

Build your plan in 4 steps

1. Create the plan for your project

After setting up your project, navigate to the Tasks tab and click Create.

From there, click on Open Plan.

2. Set up your tasklists

In the left-hand menu, go to the List, Plan, or Grid view.

Create tasklists to organize your tasks and milestones into a work breakdown structure (WBS). Tasklists help structure your Timeline into easy-to-see phases or deliverables.

3. Add and schedule tasks

With your tasklists in place, you can start creating tasks. Make sure each task has a start and due date.

⚠️ Note: Tasks without dates will not appear correctly in the Timeline.

4. Add milestones

Milestones mark important events such as approvals, meetings, or delivery deadlines. Add them to your plan so they appear on the Timeline alongside tasks.

Set up your Timeline quickly

If task dates aren’t finalized, or if you want to quickly populate the Timeline, you can bulk-assign dates to multiple tasks at once using the Bulk Edit function.

Select an entire task list using the checkbox. The Tasks selected dialog box will appear. From here, click Edit and enter a start and due date that applies to all selected tasks.

After saving, open the Timeline View to see the tasks placed within that date range. From there, you can adjust task dates, change durations, or add dependencies with full visibility.

Set up the Timeline

Once your plan has been set up with tasklists, tasks, milestones and dates, open the Timeline View.

Your project plan will now be displayed as a Timeline (Gantt Chart).

From here, you can:

  • Adjust task dates by dragging tasks on the Timeline
  • Create dependencies between tasks
  • Save a baseline to compare planned vs. actual progress.
  • Update %Done to track task completion.
